Biracial teen suffers burns in attack, says men tried to set her on fire

An assault on a biracial woman in Madison was being investigated Thursday as a hate crime after the woman told police she was burned by lighter fluid thrown at her and ignited by a white man, just a few blocks from violent protests at the state Capitol.

Althea Bernstein told police she was driving near the Capitol about 1 a.m. Wednesday and had stopped at a red light with her driver’s side window down. Bernstein, 18, told police she heard someone yell out a racial epithet, looked around and saw four white men.

One sprayed liquid on her face and neck and threw a flaming lighter at her, she told police. Bernstein said she pulled forward, put out the flames and drove home where her mother encouraged her to go to the hospital. She was treated for burns. Hospital staff believe the liquid was lighter fluid, police said.

Just don’t know……………………………….

Flaming lighter?? Had to be a Zippo or other petroleum distillate lighter because butane lighters are spring-loaded. Sounds like Richard Pryor’s problem…

Yes about the Zippo and quite frankly, ain’t gonna be any racist that’s going to toss away a perfectly good zippo. “Tossing the lighter to start fire/explosion” is a movie stunt.
I’ve read about 20 stories on this event and I am getting really, really, really close to going ahead and calling it a hoax.

Sounds like a young participation trophy winner wants a small piece of fame.

Personally, I think it’s going to be a “Twana Brawley” situation where she did something and needs to cover for it. We shall see !!!

My Zippo is the same one I carried in the RVN 50+ years ago. Been repaired twice and I’ll be farkled before I threw it away. Ask the “media” to look closer.
