Todays Second Amendment Educational Challenge……..

During German class in college, a classmate read a passage from a text that included the “Danube River.”

Instead of correctly pronouncing it as “dan-yoob”, he said “da-new-be.”

Herr Himmler corrected the student and the student replied, “I guess I’m just dumb.”

Herr Himmler replied, “You are not dumb, but you are ignorant and that is something you can change.”

That’s always stuck with me.

Now, ignorance is the only unlimited matter in the universe and there is flat out almost limitless ignorance about the Second Amendment and guns.

The below post is a perfect example of that:

The United States And Guns ‹ Views and Observations ‹ Reader — WordPress.com

When the Constitution was created in the 18th century, it was a different time. There were no smartphones, communication was slow, the standing army was tiny, and many people lived in small rural communities or farms that were isolated and far away from help if something occurred. If you lived on a small farm in the 1700s, you couldn’t jump in the car and go to the grocery store. Small farmers frequently had to be much more self-reliant growing a significant amount of their own food and sometimes hunting for meat. Also if a criminal came to the farm, they couldn’t call 911. In many ways, they were on their own because it could take hours or longer to alert the authorities and get help. Something else to consider is that the muskets of the 18th century were much slower to reload and much less accurate than weapons today. Someone with significant practice could get off maybe three shots in a minute, give or take. In real world circumstances, it was likely often less than three a minute. And finally, the United States of the 18th century and early 19th centuries relied heavily on militias for defense because the standing army was tiny.
In other words, the Second Amendment was written in another time when the circumstances were vastly different than today

Your assignment today is to visit that site and correct the ignorant soul.

BUT !!!

Please be nice and respectful.

They’ve got their comments moderated, so I doubt there will be anything published from our side.

But I tried anyways with the following:

In the United Kingdom is not a murder until someone is convicted of the crime. Until then, it’s just a death. You are quoting the murder rate, which means the conviction rate; not the death rate.

The UK has been very cagey about talking about the unsolved death rate, which is estimated to be as high as the US murder rate.

In the US it’s a murder from the moment the investigation begins.

The numbers aren’t exactly comparable. That invalidates much of your point, sorry. You might try to locate sources which aren’t attempting to sell a position next time.

Going back to “times are different” point.

Using your cell phone to call the police to say there is someone in the nightclub/school/airport/church/grocery store shooting people will instantly connect you to someone who will dispatch the police. Typically they will arrive five to twenty minutes later. After they arrive, they will secure a perimeter and make preparations to enter the building where you and the shooter are. Typically this takes 30 minutes to an hour! Sometimes much longer. Then the police storm the building and often hear the last shot of the shooter killing themselves. This does you no good because you’re long since dead while the shooter took their time making sure everyone they’d wounded or missed the first time gets a coup-de-grace.

Times aren’t that different, we’re still on our own to defend ourselves.

Contrast the dial 911 and wait scenario with what often (maybe even typically) happens when one of the potential victims is armed and shoots back. The entire event is usually over in less than a minute and even if the armed victim misses the shooter, they usually kill themselves.

They purposely select places where their victims will be unarmed by law. Places like nightclubs (Pulse Shooting), schools (Sandy Hook and Parkland) churches (Sutherland Springs, TX) and airports (Ft Lauderdale).

Disarming people kills more innocent lives than any other thing.

Gun murders (ALL murders actually) pale in comparison to what governments get up to when their citizens are completely disarmed. You might be surprised that Hitler and the Holocaust are merely “also rans” compared to The Soviet Union and Communist China. I am not even including the deaths from war.

Yes it would be tilting at windmills to try to educate him/her, but there might be a third person watching or listening that might be convinced by our intelligent, rational and factual points to come to our side
