Staying with the “Gruel” theme for lunch, I got another bag of barley and a can of mushrooms.
Add a slab of beef and it can officially be called “Beef Barley Soup.”
A simple browning of the beef in the dutch oven.
Toss in the drained can of mushrooms.
Add the water and barley,
BEHOLD !!!!
Beef Barley Soup.

So easy, a caveman could do it. Or even me.
“Caveman Simple” is a good thing.
Less chance of me hurting myself or setting the kitchen on fire.
Thanks for stopping in !
And I’ve often made something similar and it’s GOOD!
Simple and filling !!
Thanks for stopping by.
Sounds VERY nice. Might just have to try that.
I did add a little salt and pepper to the meat, but other than that, it is mostly a good barley flavor.
This is the kind of lunch I make to take to work where it’s mostly just about putting food in the piehole!
I might be tempted to use a beef stock, but yours does sound superb.
I see no reason that beef stock should not be used.
I was tempted to use the water that the mushrooms cam in for added flavor.
The gruel I made the previous week with the mushrooms had a really, really good flavor.
I bet it did! And I’ve got some dried shiitakkes that might go well in that.
